Overview

This IDC Health Insights Perspective highlights the author's evolving perspective on one aspect of the growing opportunity for social media in the life sciences. Oracle OpenWorld life science discussions around gamification in October reinforce the growing view that social media (and especially gamification) has the potential to drive improved key stakeholder engagement across the life science value chain, with the potential to yield multiple new benefits to organizations. By leveraging the industry's newfound willingness to consider best practices from outside of the industry, it should be possible to incorporate the best features of gamification within the constraints of a heavily regulated life science ecosystem, including specifically several areas within clinical development. As a fundamental, far-reaching, transformative process, gamification has the potential to leverage human nature to enhance and strengthen human connections ranging from discovery researchers through to clinical development professionals and ending with consumers and patients.
