This IDC Health Insights report summarises the key issues discussed at the third New Zealand Health Roundtable, a closed-door forum involving senior executives from the New Zealand health sector. It also includes a summary of ICT investment trends in healthcare, including a five-year IT spending forecast through to 2016. This year, the focus was on how innovation was being leveraged to maximise patient outcomes, with a particular focus on innovative processes that emerged to tackle the healthcare challenges presented, as a result of the Canterbury earthquakes in 2010 and 2011. Other themes covered in the roundtable included mobility in healthcare, actionable analytics, the connected health platform, and digitisation of healthcare.

"Healthcare providers are no longer able to prescribe how, when, and where patients can access clinical services," says Louise Francis, senior market analyst, IDC New Zealand. "Instead, healthcare systems must be built around meeting the needs of patients, creating solutions that both clinicians and consumers want to use, and are dynamic enough to evolve as the healthcare system develops scientifically, socially, and economically over time."

"New Zealand healthcare IT has the right vision, attempting to create a shared care plan, which connects every healthcare-related jigsaw piece to create a complete picture of a citizen's healthcare story. The next step is obviously to IT-enable the primary care sector, and the social support framework to create this synergy," says Sash Mukherjee, research manager, IDC Health Insights, Asia/Pacific.
